"The Last Battlefront" is a one-hour historical film on the fight for self-government in Washington, D.C. as told through the lives and voices of its citizens. At a time of national struggles over voting rights, these little-known stories show how Washingtonians remain haunted by unresolved conflicts from the nation’s earliest days. The Last Battlefront documents a historic struggle to secure equal access to voting and to the basic rights guaranteed in the Constitution and the values on which our nation was founded.

The film looks at Washington, D.C. as a symbolic landscape of national identity and freedom, yet it remains the only capital of a major democracy in the world, whose residents lack representation in Congress and real self-government. Few Americans know about the city beyond the mall and are unaware that D.C. residents lack basic rights enjoyed by Americans in the states. How could this have happened? We look for answers in four turning points in Washington, D.C.’s history from 1783 to today.
